In April 1998, First Federal held an initial stock offering and converted from a mutual savings association to a stock savings bank. To make sure it gave something back to the community, First Federal became only the sixth bank in America to link the creation of a charitable foundation to its stock offering.
That meant that 5% of the proceeds gained from the initial sale – the equivalent of five million dollars – was set aside to establish this new, community-minded organization and, thus, The First Federal Charitable Foundation was born. Since its inceptive, we have provided nearly $5 million to more than 250 nonprofit organizations throughout Luzerne, Schuylkill, Carbon and Columbia Counties.
The First Federal Charitable Foundation was established to support worthwhile community causes and its mission remains clear, as it strives to nurture non-profit institutions and programs that will effectively serve those in need from our community, empower non-profit institutions and programs that will expand their presence in and services to those of our community, and promote opportunities for new non-profit institutions and programs that will serve the unserved of our community.
From its very beginning, the Foundation has played an important role in providing financial support to a number of non-profit organizations. These non-profits traditionally have fulfilled important needs in our community and have helped foster: artistic and cultural expression, civic and economic development, community improvement, educational growth and awareness, health and human services, home ownership opportunities and general welfare.
