Avenues receives First Federal Charitable Foundation grantAvenues, which provides services to individuals with disabilities and their families, received a grant from the First Federal Charitable Foundation that it will use to renovate the gymnasium and attached patio at its facility on Park Street in Pottsville.

Avenues, formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of Schuylkill, Carbon and Northumberland Counties, plans to use the grant money to put a new roof on its gymnasium and the connecting patio area. Future renovation plans call for refurbishing the interior of the gymnasium. Once completed, the gym will serve as a multipurpose room that will benefit Avenues with space to provide summer programs to individuals with disabilities, a training space for its employees and program participants, a distribution site for the organization’s food pantry and a meeting room that will be available to local community groups.

Avenues Executive Director Peter Keitsock said that many of the people who receive services from Avenues look at the organization as a place where they feel accepted.

“People with disabilities have typically not been included in their communities but they want to be active in those areas. This need to be accepted is evident every day here at Avenues,” Keitsock said. “Approximately 900 infants, children, adults and senior citizens attend our daily programs, so being able to provide a better multipurpose room for them is vital to our organization. We appreciate the support of First Federal Charitable Foundation and its grant program and look forward to providing services to those in need for many years to come.”

Avenues was founded in 1952 as a member of United Cerebral Palsy to provide better services to children with special needs and their families. In 2018, Avenues helped more than 400 individuals with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities in Schuylkill County and the Greater Hazleton area. The organization also operates a food pantry from its facility at 2 Park Street in Pottsville that serves approximately 400 individuals of all ages who are at a low to moderate income level.

First Federal Charitable Foundation Executive Director Megan Kennedy said, “We’re honored to support Avenues with this grant. This organization began 66 years ago because of the determination of a small group of parents who wanted better services for their children and it’s amazing to see how its grown over the years. Everyone deserves a chance to live a full and independent life and our hope is that this grant will help those with disabilities in the area lead a productive life and feel connected to the community.”

The First Federal Charitable Foundation was established to support worthwhile community causes. It strives to nurture nonprofit institutions and programs that will effectively serve those in need from the community, empower nonprofit institutions and programs that will expand their presence in and services to the area, and promote opportunities for new nonprofit institutions and programs that will serve the unserved.

Nonprofit organizations with a 501(c)(3) IRS designation that are located in Luzerne, Schuylkill, Carbon and Columbia counties are eligible to apply for a grant. Any organization whose headquarters is in another county but services either Luzerne, Schuylkill, Carbon or Columbia counties may apply for a grant to be used in one of those counties.
